THE PREPS : Roundup : Mater Dei Takes Cross-Country Titles

Kelly Flathers of Mater Dei High School won the Angelus League girls’ cross-country final and led the Monarchs to the league title Thursday at Otterbein Park in La Puente.
Flathers, who also won the race last season, ran the hilly 3-mile course in 19 minutes 21 seconds. Mater Dei had 20 points.
The Mater Dei boys’ team had 7 runners in the top 10 to win the league title with ease. Mater Dei finished with 20 points.
Dennis Looney of St. Paul won in 16:11 but Tom McCauley (16:28) of Mater Dei was second and Mike Nielsen (16:34) of Mater Dei was third.
In the Pacific Coast League boys’ cross-country finals:
Steve Frisone of Laguna Hills won the 3-mile race at Woodbridge in 15:19 and teammate Tony Gibney was second in 15:32 to lead the Hawks with 20 points.
In the Pacific Coast League girls’ cross-country finals:
Danisha Bendz of Costa Mesa won the race in 18:24, but Woodbridge won the team competition with 22 points. Cathi Peck (18:26) was second, Amy Robles (19:28) of Woodbridge was third.
