Construction of the first synagogue in the University City area was approved Tuesday by the San Diego City Council.
Friends of Chabad Lubavitch has submitted plans to build the 9,954-square-foot synagogue on property currently owned by All Saints Lutheran Church in the 6300 block of Radcliffe Drive.
The council’s 7-0 approval of the synagogue, with Councilmen Bruce Henderson and Bob Filner absent, came despite objections from residents of a neighboring senior citizens complex.
The residents of Regency Villas, in the 3300 block of Genessee Avenue, complained that the synagogue would increase noise and traffic in the area.
