NHL Roundup : Toronto Wins, 8-5, Ends Losing Streak

Dan Daoust, Ed Olczyk and Al Iafrate scored short-handed goals Wednesday night as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 8-5, to end a 6-game losing streak at Toronto.

The defeat kept the Penguins from taking the Patrick Division lead from the New York Rangers.

Iafrate had 2 goals and Craig Laughlin, Brian Curran and Dan Marois added 1 each for the Maple Leafs. Derek Laxdal scored an empty-net goal with 23 seconds remaining.

Bob Errey scored twice and Mario Lemieux, with his league-high 21st goal, Dan Quinn and Rod Buskas added goals for Pittsburgh.

Chicago 3, Buffalo 2--Dirk Graham scored during a 5-minute Buffalo power play to break a 2-2 tie in the second period, and the Blackhawks held on to beat the Sabres at Chicago.

First-period goals by defensemen Trent Yawney and Dave Manson gave the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead. The Sabres tied the score in the span of 28 seconds midway in the second period on goals by Mark Napier and Phil Housley.

Montreal 5, New York Islanders 4--Mats Naslund’s goal 1:06 into overtime gave the Canadiens a victory over the Islanders at Montreal.

Bobby Smith, who set up Naslund on a 2-on-1 break, sent the game into overtime with a goal at 6:27 of the third period after rookie David Volek sparked New York with consecutive goals that erased a 3-2 deficit.

Detroit 4, Hartford 3--Gerard Gallant had 2 goals and an assist to lead the Red Wings past the Whalers at Hartford for their fifth straight victory.

The Whalers fell behind, 4-0, after 2 periods but rallied on third-period goals by Scott Young, Randy Ladouceur and Sylvain Turgeon.

Winnipeg 2, Edmonton 1--Pat Elynuik scored his second goal of the game 46 seconds into overtime, and the Jets beat the Oilers at Edmonton.

The defeat kept the Oilers tied with the Kings for second place in the Smythe Division.

Elynuik finished a 2-on-1 break with Thomas Steen after Edmonton defenseman Kevin Lowe got caught near the blue line.

Edmonton’s Esa Tikkanen scored his team-leading 14th goal in the second period to stretch his scoring streak to 6 games. Elynuik countered with his first goal in the third period.
