A Laguna Hills man remained in Orange County Jail on Saturday after he lost control of his motor home on the Santa Ana Freeway in Tustin and struck a parked car, killing an infant boy inside and injuring three members of the baby’s family.
John Richard Warrington, 41, was booked on suspicion of felony drunk driving after his Winnebago struck Ricardo Gutierrez, a 6-month-old seated in the child safety seat of a Ford Thunderbird. The baby died Saturday morning at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
California Highway Patrol officials said Warrington was driving south on the freeway at Newport Avenue at 9:16 p.m. on Friday when his motor home ran over the Thunderbird, crushing it, and overturned.
The infant’s father, Ufracio Gutierrez, 29, of Lancaster, was in serious condition Saturday at UCI Medical Center. The infant’s sister, Vanessa Gutierrez, 4, was in good condition at the same hospital. The children’s mother, Alma Camarero, 25, was treated at the hospital and released.
Warrington was treated for minor injuries at Healthcare Medical Center in Tustin and then jailed. His bail was set at $10,000.
At the jail Saturday, Warrington declined to discuss the incident.
Domingo Gutierrez, brother of Ufracio Gutierrez, said Saturday that his brother had left Lancaster on Friday to drive to Mazatlan, Mexico, for a relative’s wedding.
