Times Travel Editor

Last week we mentioned several rental opportunities in Britain. Now comes this note from Christy Campbell, the charming hostess of In The English Manner: “We still have quite a few rental apartments in London available over the Christmas holidays, but travelers should make plans now, whether it be with us or in hotels or other rental units. London promises to be quite full this year at Christmas.”

Already store windows are reflecting the warmth of the season in old London Town. The air is crisp. Plum puddings and other good things are on order for holidays that come alive with song and good cheer in a city that rings out with Christmas spirit.

Swiss Farm Vacations

Switzerland is expensive, but if you work it right it can be a bargain. For a Swiss farm vacation the average rate per adult figures out to about $10 a day. It’s even cheaper for kids. And for an additional charge the farm family will prepare breakfast and dinner. Farm hosts in the village of Altnau near Lake Constance, Bretzwil (near Basel), Appenzell, Escholzmatt and Greppen near Lucerne, Plaffeien, Sumeswald, Zimmerwald and Zollbrueck.

Switzerland also has jumped into the B&B; market. About $25 per person a day (including service and taxes). Several towns have banded together to publish a brochure (Baden, Biel, La Caux-de-Fonds, Chur, Fribourg, Neuchatel, Sion, Solothurn, Thun, Winterthur). Besides the B&B; setup you get free use of local public transportation, entry into museums, public swimming pools. There’s even a free sightseeing tour. The brochure provides details on each town, a special events calendar.

And there’s the Sporthotel Tannenboden in Flurnserberg that’s put together a package for dog owners: six nights’ accommodations with breakfast and dinner and a kennel for your pet will cost you about $265.
