United Airlines, having won approval from the Department of Transportation to fly between New York and Sydney via Tokyo, announced that it would file promptly with the Japanese and Australian governments for necessary approvals to activate its route authority. United was chosen over competitors American, Delta and Northwest airlines. Stephen M. Wolf, chairman of UAL Corp., United’s parent, said the airline planned to begin service “soon after all necessary authorities are approved.”
