U.S.-backed Afghan guerrillas fighting the Soviet-supported Kabul government said they recaptured a vital border post and again closed the main road to Pakistan in the Khyber Pass. Sources in the Pakistan-based Afghan resistance said the rebels, following five days of intense fighting, overran the key town of Torkham near the Pakistan border on the historic pass and gained control of at least 20 miles of the road leading to Jalalabad. Guerrilla sources said hundreds of government troops were killed or captured and a large cache of weapons and military vehicles--including tanks--were seized.
