Jorgensen Runs to 2nd State Title

Kira Jorgensen, a Rancho Buena Vista High School senior, won her second consecutive state cross-country title Saturday at Woodward Park, winning the 3.1-mile girls’ Division I race in a time of 17 minutes 42 seconds.

In running the fastest girls’ time of the day, Jorgensen defeated Rayna Cervantes (17:50) of Montebello and last year’s Division I champion, sophomore Deena Drossin (17:55) of Agoura.

Last year, Jorgensen won the Division II title in 17:34.

Francis O’Neill of San Pasqual was fourth in the boys’ Division I race, the fastest and closest of the day; O’Neill’s 15:08 was just behind winner Bryan Dameworth of Agoura, who finished in 15:03 to win his second consecutive Division I title. Mike Williamson (15:04) of Thousand Oaks was second, and Jimmy Rodriguez (15:05) of Santa Ana Valley was third.

Poway’s boys finished third in Division I with 128 points behind Dana Hills (91) and Rowland (124). The San Pasqual boys finished 15th with 332 points.

In Division II, the El Camino boys’ team scored 298 points to tie for 13th with San Luis Obispo. La Jolla finished 17th with 501.

Individually, Scott Hempel of Walnut repeated as the Division II champion with a time of 15:15.

In Division III boys’ team competition, Calvin Christian finished eighth with 178, and Coronado was 10th with 231. Matt Metzger of San Francisco University won the Division III race in 16:00. Jim Goode of Francis Parker finished eighth in in 16:35.

Two local teams, San Pasqual and Mt. Carmel, had strong showings in the Division I girls’ team competition. San Pasqual was third with 119 points, and Mt. Carmel was eighth with 210. Palos Verdes won with 65.

The El Camino girls were 10th in Division II with 357 points. Newport Harbor won with 75. The Coronado girls’ team finished 10th in Division III with a score of 225. Angels Camp Bret Harte won with 54 points.

In the girls’ Division II race, Karen Hecox of South Hills, winning in 18:01. Rachel Lewis of Santa Cruz Catalina was the Division III girls’ champion in 18:50.

Volleyball Playoffs

Francis Parker defeated Cal Baptist, 15-12, 15-5, 15-2, at Francis Parker to win the Division III Southern California championship. This victory enables the Francis Parker to move on to the state tournament, where it will attempt to defend its back-to-back state championships. The state tournament begins next Saturday at CS Fullerton.
