NCAA Division I-AA and II Roundup : Georgia Southern Beats The Citadel; Idaho Wins

Joe Ross ran 75 yards for a touchdown to start a Georgia Southern comeback, and Frank Johnson scored on a 28-yard run to put the Eagles ahead for good in a 38-20 victory over The Citadel at Statesboro, Ga., Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.
In next Saturday’s quarterfinals, Georgia Southern will meet Stephen F. Austin.
Ross finished with 175 yards in 15 carries, including the long touchdown run that cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 10-7 in the first quarter.
Ernest Thompson’s 3-yard touchdown run then put Georgia Southern ahead, but Citadel quarterback Gene Brown, who had scored on a 10-yard rollout in the first quarter, added a 5-yard scoring run to give the Bulldogs a 17-14 halftime lead.
Johnson, who gained 103 yards in just 4 second-half carries, ran for his touchdown in the third quarter to give the Eagles a 21-17 lead.
Idaho 38, Montana 19--Quarterback John Friesz passed for 398 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Vandals at Moscow, Ida. The Vandals will play host to Northwestern State of Natchitoches, La., next Saturday.
Stephen F. Austin 24, Jackson State 0--Cornerback Johnnie Hendrix returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown to lead Stephen F. Austin, making its first postseason appearance ever, over Jackson State at Nacogdoches, Tex.
Northwestern St. 22, Boise St. 13--Northwestern State linebacker Mark Newstrom scored a safety on a blocked punt to break a 13-13 deadlock and lead the Demons at Boise, Ida.
Furman 21, Delaware 7--A fumble led to a 3-yard touchdown run by Furman quarterback Frank DeBusk in the first quarter, and John Bagwell scored on a 1-yard run late in the game as Furman won at Greenville, S.C.
W. Kentucky 35, W. Illinois 32--Zip Zanders and Ron Burroughs each returned interceptions for touchdowns to lead Western Kentucky to a victory over Western Illinois at Macomb, Ill. The Hilltoppers took advantage of 6 interceptions to build a 28-3 halftime lead, then had to withstand a 29-point fourth-quarter rally by Western Illinois.
E. Kentucky 28, Massachusetts 17--Tim Lester scored 2 touchdowns and Elroy Harris rushed for 141 yards to lead Eastern Kentucky at Richmond, Ky.
Texas A&I; 34, Tennessee Martin 0--Texas A&I; fullback Heath Sherman rushed for 128 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Javelinas over the Pacers at Kingsville, Tex.
Marshall 7, North Texas 0--John Gregory hit Mike Barber with an 8-yard touchdown pass after a muffed punt to lift Marshall to a victory over North Texas at Huntington, W.Va.
In the second round of the Division II playoffs, quarterback Tony Trosin completed 21 of 30 passes for 302 yards and 4 touchdowns as Cal State Sacramento beat North Carolina Central, 56-7, at Sacramento to advance to a meeting with North Dakota State in the semifinals.
North Dakota State, with quarterback Chris Simdorn running 1, 2 and 66 yards for 3 fourth-quarter touchdowns, beat Millersville, 36-26, at Fargo, N.D. Simdorn rushed for 167 yards in 21 carries.
At Portland, Ore., Chris Crawford passed to Tim Corrigan for a 33-yard touchdown pass play with a little more than a minute left to give Portland State a 20-13 win over Jacksonville (Ala.) State. In a semifinal game next Saturday, Portland State will face Texas A&I.;
The Division II championship game will be played Dec. 10 in Florence, Ala.
