About 300 residents in a 4-square-block area of North Hollywood were evacuated Saturday night when the strong smell of a pesticide was detected.
The Los Angeles Fire Department ordered the evacuation as a precaution until the source of the odor could be determined. Fire officials determined that the smell came from the pesticide malathion that a homeowner had sprayed on his lawn. After a 3-hour wait, residents were allowed to return to their homes at 6 p.m.
