The Soviet Union’s doubles team of Larissa Savchenko and Natalia Zvereva won the final two sets Friday to give the top-seeded Soviet Union a 2-1 victory over Spain in a Federation Cup quarterfinal tennis match at Melbourne, Australia.
Arantxa Sanchez and Conchita Martinez, each 16, held a 6-4, 1-1 lead over the Soviet pair in the match Thursday when rain halted play. However, the Soviet team won the second and third sets by 6-4 scores to avert the upset. In singles, Savchenko beat Martinez, 7-6, 6-2, but Sanchez upset Zvereva, 7-6, 6-1, to even the match.
In another quarterfinal match, defending champion West Germany downed Australia, 2-1.
