San Diego police have arrested two men on suspicion of kidnaping four Nicaraguans and a Mexican in San Ysidro, police said Saturday.
Rosalio Ayala-Lopez, 23, of Sinaloa, Mexico, and Jesus Cornejo Casillas, 23, of Guadalajara, are being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.
Police said two men kidnaped the victims Thursday from a San Ysidro restaurant and took them to Tijuana, where the victims’ relatives were called and payments were demanded.
The relatives, who live in Los Angeles, paid ransoms in San Diego to have their family members returned safely, police said. Patrol officers became suspicious of the activity, but officials did not say what that activity was.
The Nicaraguans were reportedly seeking political asylum.
Police said the two suspects will be arraigned Monday before a U.S. magistrate.
