William Vickery, director of the music program for the National Endowment for the Arts in the nation’s capital, has been named president and managing director of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Vickery will coordinate administrative and artistic functions of the organization, it was announced by the chamber orchestra’s board of directors. The appointment marks the culmination of a search that began with the resignation of Deborah Borda on Sept. 29. Borda will leave Jan. 1 to become executive director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall Inc. Vickery was appointed music program director of the National Endowment for the Arts in 1987.
