CHICAGO — At least 357 people died on the nation’s highways Christmas weekend, slightly less than during a normal non-holiday weekend this time of year, according to police reports and the National Safety Council.
The highest number of deaths were reported in Florida with 40, California with 38 and Texas with 33.
The Chicago-based National Safety Council had estimated there would be between 350 and 450 traffic deaths during Christmas weekend, which for counting purposes ran from 6 p.m. Friday until midnight Monday local time.
