Infant Mortality at Record Low, Cuba Says

HAVANA — Cuba’s infant mortality rate has dropped to 12 per 1,000 live births, its lowest level ever and one of the 20 lowest in the world, the state-run Prensa Latina news agency said Tuesday.
Infant mortality was 60 per 1,000 in 1959, when the average life expectancy of a Cuban was 50 years compared with 74 now. Health care has been one of the priorities of the Cuban revolution, which marks its 30th anniversary this week.
