High School Soccer : Leal, Valdez Propel Monroe Past Van Nuys, 7-2

Jaime Leal and Jose Valdez combined to score 5 goals as Monroe routed Van Nuys, 7-2, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference boys’ soccer opener Wednesday at Van Nuys.
Leal, a senior, scored 3 first-half goals as Monroe (5-0) built a 4-0 lead at intermission.
Valdez, a junior, scored in each half. Sergio Vargas and Geraldo Diaz added second-half goals for Monroe, a semifinalist in last year’s City Section playoffs.
Grant 2, Reseda 1--Uri Zakay scored the winning goal 5 minutes into the second half as the Lancers upset the Regents in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Reseda.
Reseda, the defending City champion, took a 1-0 lead on Teddy Davila’s penalty kick early in the first half. Grant forged a deadlock 5 minutes later when Stephen Tourouk scored.
The win was the first of the season for Grant (1-2-2). Reseda is 3-1-1.
Chatsworth 2, Granada Hills 1--Steve Zanutto scored the winning goal with 5 minutes left in the Northwest Valley Conference opener at Chatsworth.
The Chancellors (6-3) trailed, 1-0, at halftime, but tied the score on Chris Horn’s goal 10 minutes into the second half.
Kelly Brockway scored for Granada Hills (2-1-1).
Chaminade 2, Moorpark 0--Brady Mitchell and Nico Fasano each scored for the Eagles (5-2) in the nonconference match at Moorpark.
GIRLS
Chatsworth 10, Cleveland 0--Chris Bassler scored 5 goals for Chatsworth (4-0) in the Northwest Valley League opener at Cleveland.
Alemany 2, Long Beach Wilson 0--Rachel Corelli and Angela Forstrom each scored for the Indians (7-6-2), who posted their fifth shutout in the nonconference match at Long Beach Wilson.
