IN BRIEF : Spinks on Probation Over Driving

ROCHESTER, Mich. — A judge placed former world heavyweight boxing champion Leon Spinks on six months’ probation Thursday for an impaired driving conviction.
Spinks, who was arrested April 24 in Auburn Hills, Mich., pleaded guilty to the reduced charge Sept. 30. Charges of driving with a suspended license, having an open intoxicant in the car and not wearing a seat belt were dropped.
Rochester District Judge James Sheehy could have sentenced Spinks to 90 days in jail.
Sheehy said he was “quite impressed” with Spinks’ probation report. Al Low, the boxer’s business manager, said Spinks has been in alcohol-abuse counseling for six months.
“I plan to stick with it. It’s good for me,” said Spinks, who will begin a new job as an assistant manager at a Detroit restaurant in a few days.
