Phoenix Gets the Nod for Formula One Auto Race

PHOENIX — The city of Phoenix’s first Formula One Grand Prix auto race will be run June 2-4 through the downtown area, officials announced.

Bernie Ecclestone, executive vice president of the governing body for Formula One racing, surveyed the proposed 2.3-mile course through Phoenix’s streets and finalized an agreement with the city.

Phoenix will be the only U.S. city to host a Formula One race in 1989.

The City Council on Jan. 13 authorized a five-year contract with Formula One for races here along with a option for five more years.

The race will be run June 4 after two days of trial eliminations, Ecclestone said at a news conference Tuesday.

Phoenix officials said the city has committed itself to initial expenses of $2.9 million plus annual expenses of approximately $1.6 million.

But the event is expected to be seen on television by 200 million people in 80 countries and Phoenix should realize an annual economic boost of $7.5 million to $30 million.,
