Community College Roundup : Cypress Pounds Imperial Valley in Tournament

Steve Gill had two three-run homers and seven RBIs to lead Cypress to a 16-2 victory over Imperial Valley in quarterfinals of the Palm Springs Baseball Tournament.
Jason Friedman had a single and a triple in four at-bats, and Brett Gregory hit a two-run homer for Cypress. Pitcher Dennis Burbank got the victory as Cypress allowed only two hits and two unearned runs.
In other nonconference games:
Golden West College 4, Southwestern College 0--Toby Foreman struck out seven and allowed just three hits in nine innings to earn the shutout in Golden West’s season opener in San Diego.
In the Long Beach City College volleyball tournament:
Orange Coast defeated the San Diego State junior varsity, 15-9, 17-15, to win the championship. Brian Lewis led OCC with 14 kills, and teammate Scott Lindquist added eight kills and seven stuff blocks. The Pirates (11-0) defeated Fresno in the semifinal. They advanced from pool play undefeated at 8-0.
