Citrus industry officials who had feared severe damage after temperatures plummeted into the 20s in Central California’s citrus groves last week say the orange and lemon crops haven’t been hurt too badly. The San Joaquin Valley’s ripe navel orange crop didn’t suffer a major internal freeze as feared. Valley lemons were damaged the most, with loss estimates ranging up to 50%. But San Joaquin Valley lemons total only 10% of the California-Arizona crop, said Curt Anderson, spokesman for Sunkist in Van Nuys. Most Southern California’s citrus groves escaped freeze losses.
