A San Diego man was in critical condition late Friday after being shot in the face by an assailant who approached a group of about 20 men and opened fire.
Police said James Phillips was among the group gathered in the parking lot in front of the Bel Air Market, in the 4400 block of Logan Avenue, when the gunman approached.
The assailant shot Phillips once in the face and the group scattered, a police spokesman said, adding that he did not know if the assault was gang-related.
