3-A Soccer Semifinals : Torrey Pines Keeps Surprising

Layla Massiroughli scored on a direct free kick from 23 yards with 12 minutes remaining to wake Torrey Pines from its first-half slumber and give the Falcons a 1-0 victory over Bonita Vista Wednesday in the 3-A girls’ soccer semifinal match at San Diego High.
“It was like we took the first half off,” Torrey Pines Coach Dennis Costello said.
Torrey Pines (16-4-2) surprised Costello this season, winning consistently with only three senior starters. The Falcons have three consecutive shutouts in the playoffs.
In the other 3-A girls’ semifinal:
Poway 1, San Dieguito 0--Poway advanced to meet Torrey Pines, the defending champions, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Torrey Pines.
In the 3-A boys’ semifinal games:
Bonita Vista 2, Poway 1--Bonita Vista (20-3-1) advanced to a 3-A championship meeting with Monte Vista Saturday at 5:30 at Torrey Pines.
Monte Vista 2, Sweetwater 0--Ernie Reyes scored both goals to lead Monte Vista (16-5-3). Sweetwater finished 13-4-2.
