Caltrans Work Overloads San Diego Freeway

Engines and tempers overheated most of Saturday as traffic backed up from Harbor Boulevard to as far south as MacArthur Boulevard at John Wayne Airport as a result of a widening project on the northbound lanes of the San Diego Freeway.
Highway Patrol officials said work by the California Department of Transportation shut down all but two lanes on the four-lane freeway just north of the Harbor Boulevard over-crossing. Traffic resumed normal speed just north of the work area. Caltrans officials said workers painted new stripes on the road and finished by 3 p.m. Saturday. They began at 7:30 a.m.
CHP officers who monitored the situation Saturday said no accidents were caused by the traffic backup. No lane closures on the freeway were scheduled for today at the Harbor Boulevard on-ramp.
