GOLETA, Calif. — Dozens of students were rescued from a third-floor ledge during a smoky fire in a hall at UC Santa Barbara, authorities said today.
One student suffered two sprained ankles, apparently in leaping onto the ledge, and two others suffered minor smoke inhalation, said Keith Collum, spokesman for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Firefighters responding to a 7:23 p.m. alarm found smoke pouring from the third floor of Phelps Hall and 20 to 40 students awaiting rescue on a third-floor ledge, Collum said. “Firefighters evacuated all the students from the building safely,” he said, and the blaze was controlled in 35 minutes. The cost of the damage was estimated at $30,000.
