Mall, Phebus to Compete in Tennis Event

Anne Mall of Dana Hills High School and Keri Phebus of Corona del Mar will compete in the Seventeen Magazine Tennis Tournament of Champions, which starts today at the Marguerite Recreation Center in Mission Viejo.
Mall and Phebus, who are both freshmen, will be part of a field that includes 96 players from across the nation.
The tournament, which runs through Saturday, features 18-and-under, 16-and-under and 14-and-under divisions. There will be 32 players competing in each division.
Phebus, 15, is ranked 37th in the United States Tennis Assn.’s 16-and-under division. She reached the quarterfinals of the tournament’s 16-and-under division each of the last two years.
Phebus is the top-seeded player in the 16-and-under division. Audrea Keller of Memphis is seeded first in the 18-and-under division, and Nicole Lodon of Rolling Hills is the top seed in the 14-and-under division.
Mall, 14, is ranked 37th in the USTA 18-and-under division. She reached the quarterfinals of the tournament’s 14-and-under division in 1987.
