Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican national holiday celebrated by many in Orange County’s Chicano community. The holiday recognizes the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when outnumbered Mexican troops held off a French expeditionary force on its way to Mexico City.
Among the Cinco de Mayo celebrations planned in Orange County:
CENTENNIAL REGIONAL PARK Address: 1800 S. Fairview Road, Santa Ana. Dates: Tomorrow through Sunday. Hours: Tomorrow, 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon to 10 p.m. Activities: The county’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration features games, carnival rides, entertainment and food booths. CAL STATE FULLERTON QUAD Address: 800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton Dates: Today and Friday. Hours: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities: Speakers are planned today at noon and Friday at 11 a.m.; also planned are mariachi bands, Aztec dancers and food booths. Admission: Free; open to the public. UC IRVINE Address: University Drive, Irvine. Date: Today through Saturday. Today: Poetry reading at 6:30 p.m. in the Cross-Cultural Center. Friday: Speakers, music and dance performances at noon at Gateway Plaza. Dancing at Cross-Cultural Center at 10 p.m. Saturday: Speakers, music and dance performances at 11 a.m. at Cross-Cultural Center.
ST. JEANNE DE LESTONNAC SCHOOL AUDITORIUM Address: 16791 Main St., Tustin. Date: Today. Time: 7:15 p.m. Activities: Cinco de Mayo concert by Pacific Symphony, honoring Father Jaime Soto, the Catholic diocese’s newly appointed vicar for the county’s Latino community. Admission: Free. MISSION VIEJO MALL Address: Mall parking structure (upper level), 27000 Crown Valley Parkway, Mission Viejo. Date: Saturday. Hours: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities: Fajita cook-off, food, drinks, entertainment, games, raffles and silent auction. Admission: $3.50 adults; $1.50 students; free to preschoolers.
