Unruly Fans Mar Campbell Hall Win in Volleyball Playoff

Excuse the Campbell Hall High volleyball team if its players appear frazzled in tonight’s Southern Section 2-A Division semifinal match against Royal at Moorpark High.
The Vikings (20-2) arrived back at school Tuesday just before midnight after defeating San Gabriel, 15-8, 10-15, 11-15, 15-10, 16-14, in a three-hour match that was halted once when fans spilled onto the court and ended with a second fight among fans at the San Gabriel gymnasium.
The trouble began in the fifth game with San Gabriel serving and holding a 14-9 lead. Although both officials ruled the serve out of bounds, a student linesman signaled the serve was good. When the officials overruled the linesman, fans spilled onto the court and battled with Campbell Hall players, according to Viking Coach Kris Ragland.
After order was restored, the Vikings scored the final seven points. A scuffle then ensued in the stands among fans, prompting the Vikings to sprint off the court and board the team bus, which was pelted with rocks as it sped off campus.
No one from Campbell Hall was injured, Ragland said.
