NATION : Bush Upgrades China Envoy Talks

WASHINGTON — Responding to the massive pro-democracy upheaval in Beijing, President Bush today upgraded his scheduled Tuesday tennis match with the leader of China’s Parliament to a meeting.
Meantime, Bush delegated Vice President Dan Quayle to meet today with visiting Wan Li, chairman of the National People’s Congress of China. White House spokesman Roman Popadiuk said he is “sure the issue of the current situation in China will raise itself at Tuesday’s meeting.” As for the tennis match, Popadiuk said, “I guess it was felt that given the current situation and the need maybe to discuss the situation in China, it would be inappropriate at this time.”
