Driver Charged in Accident That Hurt 9

Police blame a driver making an improper left turn for causing a van to serve onto a Huntington Park sidewalk Sunday afternoon, seriously injuring nine people, including a Long Beach family of five.

Hector Ibarra, 22, of South Gate was charged Monday with the traffic infraction, which could be upgraded to a charge of vehicular manslaughter if any of the victims die, Huntington Park Detective Ron Ferris said.

Most seriously injured in the accident were Isabelle and Alphonso Herrera and their three children, Leticia, 12; Jorge, 9, and Mariela, 1 1/2. Isabelle Herrera, 34, and the three children were listed in critical condition Monday at three area hospitals. Alphonso Herrera, 35, was listed in stable condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

The driver of the van, Luis Jauregui, 27, of Huntington Park, was listed in serious condition at Harbor-UCLA on Monday.

Authorities said Jauregui’s van jumped a curb, struck six pedestrians and crashed into a restaurant wall when he swerved to avoid Ibarra’s car in an intersection.

Ibarra was also charged with driving without insurance, Ferris said.
