State Sen. Wadie Deddeh (D-Chula Vista) was listed in serious condition Wednesday at Sharp Memorial Hospital after open-heart surgery.
Deddeh, 68, was upgraded from critical condition after double-bypass surgery Tuesday, hospital spokeswoman Caty Van Housen said.
He underwent the operation for a blockage of the arteries that was discovered during a physical examination Friday.
Deddeh is expected to be released next week, Van Housen said. He is not expected to return to work in Sacramento until after the Legislature’s monthlong summer recess ends Aug. 21.
Deddeh represents the 40th Senatorial District, which covers parts of the city of San Diego, the border area and eastern and southern San Diego County.
