Washington State running back Steve Broussard was charged with fourth-degree assault for allegedly punching the manager of a Pullman, Wash., supermarket who had ordered Broussard and a former teammate to leave the store.
Pullman police cited Broussard, and misdemeanor charges were filed with the Whitman County prosecutor’s office.
Broussard, who will be a senior in the fall, led the Pacific 10 Conference in rushing last season with 1,280 yards.
Police reports said Broussard and Mike Wimberly walked into the supermarket early last Sunday and began eating some items in the delicatessen without paying.
Dante DeVon, the night manager, told the men to leave, but Wimberly cursed and spat at him, the police reports said. As DeVon was attempting to get the pair through two sets of automatic doors at the store entrance, Broussard allegedly grabbed him and punched him in the chest and face, the police reports said.
After police cited Broussard, he was released on his own recognizance. Wimberly was not charged.
