Chilean Opposition Firm on Candidate

SANTIAGO, Chile — Patricio Aylwin, president of the center-left Christian Democratic Party, won the backing Friday of three key socialist groups, ensuring that he will be the candidate of a united opposition in elections to pick Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s successor as president of Chile.
Two major Socialist Party factions and the Party for Democracy, organized mainly by elements of the old Chilean Socialist Party, announced that they are setting aside ideological differences to support Aylwin to be “the democratic president of all Chileans.”
Opinion polls indicate that Aylwin is likely to defeat any candidate of the pro-government right, which has not yet settled on a presidential nominee. The elections are scheduled Dec. 14.
