Up to one-third more people than had generally been predicted will develop AIDS in the next three years, according to a government report due out Monday and reported upon in the Washington Post. The report seriously questions the nation’s ability to contain the epidemic. “It is clear there has been a sizable under-representation of the epidemic on a national level,” the report states, adding that problems obtaining enough information “apparently minimize the number of cases categorized as heterosexual risk.” The report was prepared over the last two years by the General Accounting Office.
