McNeil Is Upset By Gildemeister, 7-5, 6-2

NEWPORT, R.I. — Laura Gildemeister of Peru upset No. 3 seed and defending champion Lori McNeil of Houston, 7-5, 6-2, Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the $200,000 Virginia Slims of Newport tennis tournament.
No. 6 Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa defeated Elizabeth Smylie of Australia, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, but No. 7 Gretchen Magers of San Antonio lost to Jill Hetherington of Canada, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
In another second-round match, Hu Na of San Diego defeated Robyn Field of South Africa, 6-1, 6-4.
