3D Systems, which produces a machine that uses lasers and chemicals to rapidly make models of parts and other equipment, said it lost $984,736 in the second quarter, compared with a $1.27-million loss a year earlier.
3D Systems is the Canadian parent firm for a Valencia company with the same name, which actually makes the equipment. The Valencia company, which was started in March, 1986, began commercial shipments of its machines only three months ago. That led to a sharp increase in the parent company’s second-quarter sales, to $3.73 million from $1.09 million.
The latest loss stemmed in part from a sharp increase in 3D Systems’ employment needed to handle the increased sales, which boosted the company’s operating costs, the company said.
For the first half of 1989, 3D Systems lost $2.77 million, compared with a $2.09-million loss a year earlier. Six-month sales jumped to $5.31 million from $1.59 million.
