Greg Cadaret got tired of waiting in line in the Oakland bullpen, so he welcomed the trade that put him in the New York Yankees’ starting rotation.
“I like it so far,” Cadaret said Monday night after holding the Cleveland Indians hitless for seven innings and finishing with a two-hitter in the Yankees’ 9-0 victory at New York.
Brook Jacoby led off the Cleveland eighth with a single to left, and Luis Aguayo doubled leading off the ninth for the Indians’ other hit.
Cadaret (3-2), making only his fifth career start, walked two and struck out six while pitching his second complete game.
“It just wasn’t hit at ‘em,” Cadaret said of Jacoby’s hit. “They hit some other balls hard, but to pitch a no-hitter, they all got to be hit at ‘em.”
Bob Geren, Steve Sax, Randy Velarde and Roberto Kelly also drove in two runs apiece for the Yankees, who knocked out Indians’ starter Scott Bailes (4-7) in the sixth and added four runs off reliever Steve Davis in the eighth.
Seattle 5, Oakland 1--Rookie Clint Zavaras pitched five scoreless innings to earn his first major league victory as the Mariners turned back the Athletics at Seattle.
The defeat dropped the A’s one game behind the Angels in the AL West.
Zavaras (1-2) yielded just two hits through five innings in his third major league start, before being relieved by Bill Swift.
Seattle took advantage of a wild pitch and a throwing error by Bob Welch (11-7) to score two runs in the first inning and Jim Presley hit a two-run homer in the eighth.
Jose Canseco led off the Oakland sixth with a double but pulled a quadriceps muscle in his right leg. He remained in the game and advanced to third on a single by Dave Parker before being replaced by Felix Jose, who scored on Dave Henderson’s sacrifice fly.
Kansas City 6, Boston 4--Jim Eisenreich hit a three-run homer to tie the game in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run on Bob Boone’s single in the eighth as the Royals rallied to defeat the Red Sox at Kansas City.
Mark Gubicza (10-9) pitched eight innings to get his first victory since July 18. He gave up four runs on 11 hits. Steve Farr earned his 17th save by pitching the ninth.
Toronto 2, Texas 1--John Cerutti pitched a five-hitter and the Blue Jays climbed back to the .500 mark by beating the Rangers at Toronto.
Two errors by Texas shortstop Fred Manrique in the sixth inning led to both Toronto runs and victimized Mike Jeffcoat (5-5).
Minnesota 4, Baltimore 2--Kirby Puckett singled home Al Newman with the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning to lift the Twins over the Orioles at Baltimore.
Roy Smith (7-3) beat the Orioles for the third time this season, holding them to one earned and five hits in seven innings.
Detroit 5-2, Milwaukee 3-5--Tom Filer pitched five-hit ball over eight innings and Paul Molitor hit a tie-breaking homer in the eighth to give the Brewers a split of a doubleheader at Detroit.
Detroit won the opener when rookie Kevin Ritz (3-1) became the first Tiger pitcher to win three consecutive starts this season.
