WORLD : U.S. Dependents Returning to China

WASHINGTON — About 260 American dependents of U.S. government personnel in China who were evacuated from that country two months ago have been authorized to return, the State Department said today.
Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler said the decision was based on an assessment that the security situation has improved in China. But she said the State Department is continuing to recommend that Americans defer non-essential travel to China until further notice.
The dependents were ordered home June 7 in the wake of “indiscriminate firing” by Chinese troops on a compound for diplomats and other foreign residents.
