Favored Cheval Volant Del Mar Winner

DEL MAR — Favored Cheval Volant responded to a strong ride by Laffit Pincay and held off the challenge of 30-1 longshot Breezing Dixie to win the $80,325 Sorrento Stakes by three-quarters of a length Wednesday at Del Mar.
Dancing Jamie was another three-quarters of a length back in third place in the field of six 2-year-old fillies.
Cheval Volant, a daughter of Kris S. and Flight, carried high weight of 117 pounds and covered the seven furlongs in 1:23 4/5 for her second victory in three career starts.
Sent off as the 8-5 favorite of the crowd of 15,498, she returned $3.60, $3 and $2.40. The victory was worth $46,575 for the partnership of Steve Shapiro, David Stark and Bill Stratton.
Breezing Dixie, with Corey Nakatani, paid $11 and $4.80; Dancing Jamie, ridden by Russell Baze, paid $4.
