Santa Monica : City Achievement Award
Santa Monica has received one of five achievement awards for small cities in the 10th City Livability Awards of the U. S. Conference of Mayors. The city was recognized for making the community a vital contemporary arts center.
Santa Monica has allocated almost $1 million for the arts since 1982, when the arts program was developed.
Among the major projects completed this year is an illuminated gateway over Wilshire Boulevard by artist Tony Delap, a large aerial painting of Santa Monica at night by artist Peter Alexander for the Santa Monica Airport administration building, and six life-size topiary dinosaur fountains by Claude and Francois Lalanne for the Third Street Promenade mall.
