A 24-year-old auto-body repairman was killed early Tuesday morning when he lost control of his van on Interstate 5 near Sea World, the California Highway Patrol said.
Ian Charles Gibbs of San Diego died at Sharp Memorial Hospital at 3:55 a.m., a CHP spokeswoman said. His passenger, Ellen Barnett, 31, also of San Diego, received minor injuries and was treated and released from Mission Bay Hospital.
Police said the accident occurred about 1:10 a.m. when Gibbs, traveling south on I-5, drove off the roadway. The van overturned three times before Gibbs and Barnett were ejected.
The CHP spokeswoman said investigators did not find seat belts in the vehicle.
