BONN — More than 2,000 East Germans have escaped to the West through Hungary the last four days and sought refuge in West Germany, a Foreign Ministry source said today.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that so far this month about 3,300 East Germans had illegally left their country. The refugees have overwhelmed West Germany’s embassies abroad and threatened its relations with Communist East Berlin.
The source said 2,000 East Germans who escaped via Austria between Saturday and Tuesday have applied to the West German Embassy in Vienna for travel documents.
