WORLD : U.S. Recalls Envoy From Bulgaria

WASHINGTON — The United States recalled its ambassador from Bulgaria today to underline its serious concern over the continuing abuse of the human rights of Bulgarian ethnic Turks.
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said: “The State Department is recalling Ambassador Saul Polansky for consultations. . . . The ongoing abuse of human rights of ethnic Turks by the government of Bulgaria remains an issue of serious concern to the U.S. government.”
According to U.S. figures, 310,000 ethnic Turks--about one-third of the community--have fled to Turkey from Bulgaria to escape the repression. Boucher said the United States is considering forms of refugee aid to relieve the financial pressure on Turkey.
