A 5-year-old girl and her pregnant mother were killed Thursday afternoon when they were struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing a street in National City, police said.
The girl was identified as Lillian Beth Zamudio of National City. Her mother was 30-year-old Martha Zamudio. The mother was nine months’ pregnant, county coroner’s officials said.
According to Mary Gaffney, a National City police spokeswoman, the victims were crossing East 18th Street in the 2600 block when they were struck.
Gaffney said the car sped from the scene, but an officer later noticed it in a parking lot near East 8th Street and Euclid Avenue. She said a person, whose identity was not released, was arrested upon returning to the car.
