Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : FBI Says Crime Is Up in First Half of Year

The FBI said reported crimes went up 3% during the first half of 1989 from the same period last year. There was a 4% increase in overall crime reports in both the South and the West, the bureau’s Uniform Crime Report said. Crime went up 2% in the Midwest and 3% in the Northeast. Among various categories of crime, the biggest increase was an 11% jump in the thefts of motor vehicle. Murders increased 5% over the same period last year. The number of murders went up 7% in the South and 6% in the West. There was a 1% increase in homicides in the Northeast.
