WORLD IN BRIEF : AFGHANISTAN : Rebels Reportedly Capture Key Base

Afghan rebels captured an important government stronghold in the mountains west of Kabul, then repulsed a counterattack, Western diplomats and guerrilla radio said. The U.S.-backed insurgents reportedly hold a key position at Pajak, 18 miles west of the capital. Thirty-seven Afghan soldiers were killed in the battle for Pajak, the sources said. Analysts said the conquest links rebel forces west and north of the city and robs the government of an important observation post.
