American Tourist Slain on St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia — A U.S. tourist was hacked to death when a man with a history of mental illness attacked her with a machete as she was hiking up a mountain on this Caribbean island, officials said Wednesday.
The St. Lucia Tourist Board said Judith Miller, in her 30s, was fatally wounded in the southwestern town of Soufriere.
Taylor, believed to be a dual citizen of the United States and West Germany, suffered a severed arm and died shortly after the attack. Her hometown was not immediately known.
The assailant, Leroy McDoom, was apprehended by police and charges are pending. Officials said the man has a history of mental illness.
