Palos Verdes High missed several late scoring opportunities Wednesday and was eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Section 3-A water polo playoffs by Capistrano Valley, 13-8, at El Camino College.
Palos Verdes finished the season 20-5, equaling last year’s school record for victories. Capistrano Valley, 24-1, advances to the semifinals.
“We had the chances and didn’t make them,” Palos Verdes Coach Jovan Vavic said. “Still, it was a great season.”
Capistrano Valley led 9-8 after three quarters, but Palos Verdes had outscored the Cougars 3-1 in the third quarter and had momentum. Palos Verdes’ Jeff Kimball made a steal with 43 seconds to go in the period and drove the length of the pool, but Capistrano Valley goalie Chris Bowman blocked Kimball’s 10-foot shot, preserving the Cougars’ one-goal lead.
Kimball and Chris Cormier led Palos Verdes scorers with three goals each.
Capistrano Valley went on to score four goals in the first 2:45 of the fourth quarter, three by Paul Felton, to break the game open. Felton led all scorers with eight goals.
Palos Verdes led briefly in the first quarter, but Felton scored two consecutive goals to put Capistrano Valley ahead for good.
