USC FOOTBALL WATCH : AN INSIDE LOOK

Winning times: USC is the team of the decade in the Pacific 10 with 56 conference wins, best record of the 1980s.
Losing times: This has not, however, been a decade of great finishes for USC. The team has been in three Rose Bowls and lost two of them. The Trojans were in three other bowl games--the Fiesta, Aloha and Florida Citrus--and lost them all. Not once in the ‘80s did they win their last two games, bowl appearances included.
USC’s record in its final two games:
1980--1-1.
1981--1-1.
1982--1-1.
1983--0-2.
1984--1-1.
1985--1-1.
1986--0-2.
1987--1-1.
1988--0-2.
Scary day up front: Offensive tackle Bill Schultz had to leave the Arizona game because he was near collapse.
“He just basically drained himself, physically and mentally,” Smith said. “Before halftime, he was pretty much out of it. You couldn’t really call it heat exhaustion. He just got so excited, he started hyperventilating. He was on his way to a heck of a game, too.”
Schultz will return Saturday against UCLA at the Coliseum.
