COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Gains Finals in State Water Polo Tournament

Golden West College advanced to the finals of the Community College State water polo tournament by defeating Modesto, 14-12, at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach Friday.
Golden West will face Cuesta in the final match at 3 p.m. at Belmont Plaza today.
Morgan Courtney had four goals and Henry Rabello added three to lead Golden West, which improved to 30-4.
Goalie Scott Taylor had 12 saves, and Golden West also was led by the strong play of two-meter men Pono Faulkner and Greg La Point, who each had two goals.
Golden West defeated De Anza, 11-2, in its first round match. Rabello had four goals in that match.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:
Golden West 3, Fullerton 2--Jeni Murrell had 12 kills for visiting Golden West in a 15-11, 9-15, 12-15, 15-10, 15-5 victory. Golden West is 16-4, 12-0.
Cypress 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Visiting Cypress swept, 15-12, 15-8, 16-14. Middle hitter Kari Calliham had 16 kills and setter Karen Lane added nine kills and 19 assists for Cypress, which ends 6-12 overall and 3-9 in conference.
Saddleback 3, Orange Coast 1--Saddleback rebounded to defeat host Orange Coast, 13-15, 15-7, 15-10, 15-5. Saddleback (15-3, 10-2) outside hitters Cyndi Rhone and Laura Farrell had 14 and nine kills and 20 and 14 digs, respectively.
Middle blocker Gena Weber paced Orange Coast (3-13, 3-9) with 12 kills and outside hitter Kathy Scanlan added 12.
In the Long Beach women’s tournament:
Cerritos 62, Orange Coast 42--Cami Bigler scored 12 points 12 points but OCC lost in the semifinal game. Lisa Pounds had 11 points for Cerritos. OCC is 3-1.
