COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Golden West Crushes Citrus in Tournament

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Kevin Andersen and Jason Vaughan took over in the second half, more out of necessity than anything else, and led Golden West College to a 102-75 victory over Citrus Thursday in the first round of the Golden West men’s basketball tournament.
Golden West’s center Alex Kreps hurt his ankle midway through the first half and didn’t return. He is questionable for tonight’s semifinal game with Antelope Valley (8-2) at 8.
Golden West (7-3) then lost forward J.J. Jenkins, who was ejected for elbowing with 7:20 remaining in the gameand Golden West leading, 72-60. Citrus’ Paris Canty missed both technical shots and Citrus turned the ball over on a traveling call.
From there, forwards Andersen and Vaughan excelled. The pair scored 22 of Golden West’s final 30 points. Andersen had 16 of his team’s last 30 and 25 in the game. Vaughan scored six of the final 30 and finished with 18. He had 16 and Andersen had 21 in the second half.
Cerritos (9-2), the defending state champion, plays Cypress (7-0) today at 6 p.m. in the other semifinal game. The championship game is Saturday at 8 p.m.
